I think I’m unhealthily obsessed with these industrial chairs. I’ve been seeing them in restaurants and on the web, but could not find the name for them until I was looking through Dwell’s website. They’re called Tolix chairs and I’m intoxicated with their appearance, shape, and material. I organized the above images to give you an idea of what colors they’re available in (and two places to potentially purchase them) but the plain steel exterior is my favorite by far. The Tolix chair originated from France is well-known decor for cafes, bistros and my favorite idea: the home. I just love how they can add a bit of industrial chic to a warm wooden dining table without looking too cold or sterile.

For those who may not know, my “Yes, Please” column is my kind way of adding things to my wish list. Hope you love these chairs as much as I do!

I love how this design can be so versatile. Although its the same style, it takes on a different character in each photo!

I want to know how they got that bluish cushion on one. My eyes aren’t deceiving me, are they? I love chairs like this. They have some at Intelligentsia in LA and I only have one pet peeve when it comes to those: they get rusty. I’m wondering if I’d have rusting problems if they were inside though.

I say “yes please” too then! I love these! I will say, they look a little uncomfortable. But some chairs can really surprise you.

Viv – I love these chairs – my Mother in law, actually has them in her outdoor area and I think she got them for almost nothing at a warehouse. She is kicking herself for not having grabbed more. This was 3-4 years ago. Now I am thinking they would go for a little more.
Great post. see you tomorrow:)

So many different interiors and these chairs work for each and every one of them. I love the ones in the photo with the exposed brick archway and the ones on the terrace-what a lovely place to have breakfast in. Ada

I’ve loved these little chairs for a long time. Someday they’ll be mine. Someday… Until then I’ll just stare longingly at the rooms above.

I agree with you, the plain stainless are my favorite… I do like the white for the very formal table setting, though. So unexpected!

Oh yes, Tolix chairs are beauties. The Starbucks I frequent near Penn Station in midtown just redid their decor and Tolix chairs are the prominent seating!

Jessica, I’m so glad you shared that link with us! I absolutely love Sundance’s catalogue, but had no idea that they sold tolix chairs. So good to know (whenever I make tons of money and want to order them =).

Gorgeous, it’s nice to see well-designed chairs – it seems like the 50’s were the last decade that appreciated chairs as sculptural objects in of themselves. But these definitely compete!

If you love the Tolix style chair and stools but can’t afford the originals then you should check out Designform Furnishings. They carry a huge variety of Tolix style chairs as well as a bunch of mid century modern style furniture. Great customer service as well!!!!

Check Overstock.com if you want Tolix-style repros here in the U.S. Search for “Tabouret.” While Antiquaire’s stock and website certainly are lovely, at 4 chairs for less than $200 on Overstock, my brain said I couldn’t pass on that deal. And I have absolutely no regrets. Neither do the majority of reviewers on Overstock. Available colors include black, white, gray (painted finish), red and lime green.
